Deskthority wiki photography competition

IANAL, but public domain is not recognised in all countries, so it would be something like WTFPL. The Deskthority Licence would not be of any use to me, as all my work is released completely unrestricted, and is already seeing use by vendors.

Not sure what system has an "arial" tag, nor which OS ever used Arial as its system font. I think I did use Arial in File Manager back in the day, while I set the Finder to use something like Times New Roman. These days I'm happy with Tahoma or Segoe; I think I use Tahoma for the Windows graphical system font in documentation, and Consolas for the Windows and Linux command line font, which is one of my favourite typefaces.

The ubiquity of Arial was Microsoft's doing, in Windows 3.1
http://www.marksimonson.com/notebook/vi ... e-of-arial

Fortunately, it doesn't seem nearly as popular these days. Daft bloody hacked Helvetica that it is. And Microsoft's later font choice, like Segoe, Consolas and my own favourite of the bunch, Candara, are fully up to snuff.

I dunno, I always thought Helvetica looked worse. I never cared for excessive x height, as it makes for cramped, unreadable copy. I forget what serif face I settled on in the end for its lower x height, Swiss 721 possibly.

Sorry for my Microsoft bashing.

I meant it serious about the DTL. DTL in the image description instead of everybody's prefered license and what DTL should be, we can decide later, or change if necessary.
:evilgeek:

Public domain is simply no license at all. If your work is public domain, then everybody can use it right away, without asking, even for commercial purposes.
:o

ps: Arial is the M$-fanboy font!!!!

Who accused you of Microsoft-bashing? Besides, there won't be many people here with the same diverse experience of computer systems as me, despite the fact that I presently use Windows.

Yes, I grant everyone the right to use my wiki photos without asking, even for commercial purposes, which companies are already doing. As the creator of the work, it is my right to make this decision.

Don't forget also that a lot of images on the wiki have come from non-members, e.g. pictures from Clicky Keyboards, Sandy, alps.tw, MouseFan, Hua-Jie Group and plenty of other people, who get to dictate their licence, not us. In all cases, the images are licensed for use within the wiki, but they may not be authorised for use outside of the wiki. I would ignore any nonsense about imposed licensing, and it would not be able to be applied to any work not authored by Deskthority community members.

The DT wiki doesnt have much of any Ducky models listed. Only 2 cheap low end old discontinued models.
Anyways, thought giving the wiki a go and was testing a bit on how it works. Updated one of the obsolete ones with couple shots. Just quick shots but better than nothing :)

Funny thing is, after years of everyone hating on "XM" (by which they generally meant Himake/Hua-Jie switches), Ducky bring out a keyboard with reduced force Xiang Min switches, and they turn out to be quite popular. More the switches than the keyboards. Perhaps because they're a bit meatier than Cherry switches? It's too bad Ducky didn't produce a reliable keyboard with an Alps plate. If the keyboard was good but the switches sucked (instead of hopelessly fragile keycaps and a suicidal keyboard), it would still have been an easier entry point for people wanting to get into Matias switches, and with a more stylish-looking keyboard than old beige junk from the 90s.

Ducky seem to have abandoned Alps clones, and there's no sign of a Matias-switch Filco Zero :(

PS there's nothing to stop you creating entries for all Ducky's past and present range. It just needs to be written with a neutral point of view (the Ducky keyboard articles were actually written with a distinctly negative slant, which I removed ages ago).

Well, theres always a possibilty to do a new board with Alps clones. One with G2pro(DK-9008G2 and DK-9087G2) base and decent PBT caps would actually be very very nice. I personally like the green clicky XM switch.
At current the Cherry MX is in such a dominating position that it would be hard to make it a grand production (casual consumer knows nothing about XM and even barely heard of Alps)...but one could be made as a special edition (enthusiasts market).

Ok, thanks for info. If i get some inspiration ill add some models on the wiki...and dont worry m8, ill keep it neutral. Just the hard data and thruthful stories. No sales pitches on wiki ;)

An Alps special edition Ducky, with quality caps and construction, would be a Deskthority hit for switch exploration alone. It'd have to be a TKL at the largest, of course. A nice new pipedream.

TKL? Noooooooooooooooooooooooooooo

Hahah, sorry for(unintentional) thread-jacking...but yeah, TKL would be a more popular choice target group considered.

...and then back to wiki / photo talk :geek:

Working on it. I'll have a few galleries in time. Should we link our contributions here?

Officially, they only need to be in Category:Photography competition 2013.

That's because one not only has to provide photos but also learn dreaded wikinese!

Not that hard — kps was even gracious enough to write up documentation to assist his competitors! (Now that is sporting.)

I think you can engrave kps into the winner's cup, no danger anybody else will pull ahead of him.

Theoretically I could beat him, but I simply don't have the time to get all the keyboards together (some need cleaning) and do the shots.

On the other hand, I already won 2 competitions at DT, so I don't need to win a 3rd one so shortly before the DT Awards 2013.

No no, I made you admin just to disqualify you. Although my plan might fail if we manage to transform to club status before that.

I thought being admin ensures I win with 100% certainty, instead of only 99.8% certainty.

I'm pretty sure it is being judged on quality, not quantity.

My bolt mod stalled, and my Acer is still stained as hard as when I started cleaning it. Bugger! Those were my two qualified entries.

D'oh, that's a shame — I was really hoping someone would enter a bolt mod photo series. Still, good to know that it's coming one day :)

Hmm. What I do have is a nice set of an IBM Displaywriter beam spring. Currently, the Wiki's only coverage of the Displaywriter is this little stub within a stub:

http://deskthority.net/wiki/IBM_Beam_Sp ... _Keyboards

Shall I start a new article? I can set it off with a fair gallery at least. (Not that I'm sure this is eligible for tonight's competition but what the hey, I've been meaning to.) Naturally, I don't know the keyboard's exact name but it's definitely one of these great Yetis!

I would start a new page as that one is getting unwieldy already. Not sure why you think it would be ineligible, but you only have 16 minutes :)
