Today is the day. 2 hours to go! Oh yeah, and I did that CT scan I talked about. I'll post the result, I had to be a little hasty, since it was a busy day at work, but the results are, at very least, interesting.

Aaaaand the winner is.... plasticchair. I never thought I would reach the point in my life where I'd have to congratulate lawn furniture, but I guess it sums up the extent of my madness. Anyway, plasticchair, congrats!

Just leave the title as it is, so people don't have to wonder what this was all about!
Maybe you can add the winner's name to the title by inserting 'Plasticchair' bewteen 'cheap' and '('.

Well, what I would really love to have is a what I call the "Goldilocks and the three bears" switch. Just something in between the brown and the clear MX switch - basically with the tactility of the clear with just a little higher actuation force than the brown. I have a board with ergo clear (G80-3000) but it feels sometimes as if the tactility is too much for the brown spring I used in the mod.Muirium wrote:So, Julle, what switches do you actually like?

Also, I like linears, but black is too heavy and red is a little light. Something in between would be nice. I just don't have the time or the energy to first order custom springs from Korea from an obscure guy who barely speaks English or accepts the most elusive payment methods, wait weeks for the springs to come (unless the Finnish post office fucks it up, which they usually do), then desolder non-lead solder joints that go all the way to the other side of the board (fucking Filco and their quality solder joints!), open each switch and wank around with the fiddly bits for hours on end, and then solder the switches back on, and curse when I burn at least one of the solder traces off the board or something similarly stupid, and then go cry about it and never try modifications ever ever ever again.
Topre 45 g is nice. I like it a lot. I don't know what it is about, but it feels good for me. It just fits the rhythm and tempo of my typing, maybe it's the way it feels kind of "laggy", in lack of a better word. But at the same time, not mushy at all. I make more mistakes with MX browns.
Topre variable now feels odd to me. I started out with a Topre variable, although the general feel was nice, I noticed I unintentionally pressed the lower force keys all the time. I tried gaming with it, sometimes I would just strafe left all the time because of the unnecessarily light A key.
I don't like the Cherry MX blue, mostly due to the low repeat rate. I mean, in the Finnish language there are lots of words with double vowels and consonants, for example the word for box, 'laatikko'. Just typing that word requires me to repeat the letters a and k in rapid succession, which doesn't happen very naturally with the blue switch. At least not for me.
Buckling spring is in many ways "the best switch", but too heavy for me and the available boards are too bulky.
ALPS... I don't really know. But when the Matias Ergo Pro comes out, I'm on it like a fatherfucker.

I was thinking about Alps the moment you said Golidilocks and the three Plastic Chairs. Never could please the fussy minx.Julle wrote:ALPS... I don't really know. But when the Matias Ergo Pro comes out, I'm on it like a fatherfucker.
The best thing about Alps (besides misspelling it with three lowercase letters as I always do) is that there is literally no end to the Alps vortex. They made a lot of fundamentally different switches, and a ton of cloners did likewise to Alps itself. Both Alps and all the other Alps (who often print Alps on their own Alps, so there) seemed to suffer from some compulsion to keep fiddling with the design and components. Or designs (and componentses) in fact. It's actually kinda maddening to keep track of. Have you seen the wiki? My god, it's full of Alps.
Matias switches are slightly saner in comparison: there are two. They're pretty nice, though. Definitely in the middle range, force wise, that the MX family seems to treat as some sort of unspeakable taboo. (Something about the grandfather…)

Just a thought before I forget it... I hate double-tapping when typing, it slows me down and feels straining. What if I assigned a macro to some key that would basically double the next character? Maybe not the brightest idea, but I've slept for only about four hours since Thursday morning anyway...Julle wrote: I don't like the Cherry MX blue, mostly due to the low repeat rate.
