IC/Discussion on beige set

actually I don't see the problem. Any European has to buy $30 of caps and use just 15 over 60 keys. Russian is the most fortunate international kit, being smaller, cheaper and it will also receive some love from the western world.

Is that just a matter of legend positioning? Because as I said I might find some smart solution for that.

That is discrimination :?

matt3o What makes you think Cyrillic set will be more popular or even close to basic set?
it simply dilutes the buyers, because some might take it just for the "cool" factor. The alternative would be to remove the current cyrillic set and place it back in a more complete form only if we reach high tiers with the other sets.
Sounds good enough. I think this is the best compromise.

Yes. The jumbled left/centre/left numrow that comes from mixing the two is troublesome.

Let's see what further legendary cunning you come up with to fix this!

Maybe stripping the number row off entirely would help everyone feel better.

Seems the sort of kit that should either be must have to the completists like 7bit, Matt and I or just not appeal at all. In that case its price won't be a very significant factor for its demand (pricing elasticity). That's my guess at least.

funds on paypal are placed "on hold" for the maximum value, but they are not actually taken from the account.

When the Group Buy ends only the real, final value is billed.

And I enter my home address for the delivery or how you finally planed it (live in germany)
Will there be a EU proxy or anything like?
I would have to pay 30% of the value including shipping additionally... :o
(That will be a total of 253€, if the prices dont fall  )

Sorry I was tired, I thought the Ù wasn't available. My mistake.

About the Bitcoin logo… IMHO Bitcoin is a not-so-great experiment : Too strong algorithm is bad for environment since those asics should better used into computation like science projects in BOINC instead of mining some SHA 256 hashes from cryptocurrencies (Litecoin is more suitable). Moreover, an argument I used for keeping 7bit away from BC is the extreme volatility of the market : April 2013 historical pike at 100USD, December 2013 another historical pike at 1000USD in the changing places. February 2014 Mt Gox fall down and the Bitcoin value is halved. Finally, because of its relative anonymity and volatility, speculation and illegal gambling are the first use of Bitcoin and the site localbitcoin is THE place to fraud taxes.
That's why I really don't think that this key deserves a place in the nerdom.

we are not celebrating volatility or illegal gambling, just the an idea that at its root is pretty nerd :)

If you want to order an ASIC for scientific computation (or any other ASIC for that matter), I will gladly oblige ;)

PS: just want to add that the nerdom kit is not 100% defined. If we find something nerdier I'm happy to replace Bitcoin and/or others

imbattable, I'm an efficient computer user : my CPU is at minimal freq and runs boinc in low priority and no GPU crunching so I'm not the kind of people who buy an ASIC :p

Matt, you already have a lot of things with no polemic that can replace the Bitcoin logo.

Some ideas:
Spoiler:
Space invaders is classic and great:

The game of life glider would be improved by either adding back the grid or making the balls into proper pixels (so it doesn't look like malformed Braille):

Microchip or IC would be neat. Maybe good for a "firmware" or "Teensy" key. I think something like the icon for the "persuadertron" in Syndicate:

Lambda (better than pi!):

WASTE:

This one's messy but could be cleaned up...

Fractals:
Mandelbrot:

Sierpinski (infini-triforce?):

Bonus points if you can crash inkscape with an infinite-length path...

Space Invader is the best of your selection. I'd have it make a comeback for sure.

Lamba is nice, but I want a complete Greek alphabet so badly that you'll have to fight to take pi! (Let alone Mu…)

Your firmware / chip idea is good. I could see that being a smart key for exactly the purpose you describe.

The "glider" from the Game of Life is, to me, the weakest key in the current Nerddom set. They're really about motion, like this:

Image

And fractals are so perfectly poorly suited to legends I have to commend the silliness of your idea! I love sliding along the fractal dimension, too, but… oh boy…

Mandelbrot is very nice or I'll put the invader back.

Invader! Mandelbrot is iconic (named after and discovered by the father of fractals himself!) but would it look any good shrunk down on a cap, with soft edges?

User avatar

I suggested the Glider because it's the hacker sign, no more, but yeah out of this signification the Game Of Life is totally about motion.
The microchip key is a great idea, IMHO it deserve a place. A fancy alternative to a firmware key.
Muirium has a point with Fractals : does those soft edges will look nice ? The detractors already claims that dyesub makes fuzzy legends.

I like the idea of a microchip key for firmware too.

The microchip will make the Nerdom set unignorable (un-ungettable?)! Do it! :)

I think an 8-pin gives the sense of an IC while also looking snazzy on a square key. Two ideas on view:

Side (isometric-esque)

Top (schematic'-y)

Vierax wrote:what do you mean ?? Sorry I'm afraid to missunderstand a so short message so be more explicit please :)
I'm an IC designer by trade, so a microchip keycap in the nerdom set would mean I'd have to buy it ;)

Edit: Thinking of how it would look on a keycap, I think a transistor schematic symbol would work better Image

Although this one is a bit ugly. I could whip something up if there is any interest in it.

Really can't understand this, because the thread wasn't like that in any way ;)
