Interesting lighting - very "stripey", matching the lines on the Atari 800. The shot makes me feel like I'm just getting ready to sit down and type on that thing. (..but it looks so "typewriter-like", that I'd also feel like sticking a sheet of paper in the top of it)

How odd. Do you really have a whole row of "no key here" keys, in two different flavours (the first and last are not the same design), or is that some weird new switch?

Keytronic apparently has two different kind of "blanks" - one kind for indicating there is a useable pad on the PCB to put a key there and the other where there is no pad.

Here is the reverse side of the two blanks, as seen on my Victor 9000:

The flatter one is the one with a pad on the PCB. (top side, one without rectangles on either side)

So that previous photo, has a whole row of blanks above the number row? I am not sure what that is supposed to achieve — if you were concerned about leaving holes in the PCB, that's hardly the shape I would choose for a blanking plate.

It's probably an option for a function key row, similar to the BBC Model B.

This is the keyboard that was used in the Franklin Ace 100 - but it was for sale as a hobby keyboard a year before the Ace came out. It's in a BYTE ad in early 1980. (can't remember the issue)

I didn't think about it until I put this keyboard back together... but it's interesting that the PCB is held on by screws that go into holes in the switch housing. Every switch has a screw hole, but not every one is used. (thankfully - that would be a hell of a lot of screws)

Notice the holes at the bottom right of each switch:


I do like how capacitive switches aren't soldered to the PCB, which makes it easier to clean the PCB & repair individual switches than other switches like ALPS or Cherry.

I did wonder what those holes were for. Yours have one hole per switch; Alphameric went in for two per switch, in opposite corners.

They're not threaded, so I'm guessing that self-tapping screws are selected?

Interesting approach. I'd also like to know if they are self-tapping...I can't imagine every switch housing is threaded. Do the holes pass through to the mounting plate (doesn't look like it actually on closer inspection...) or is the PCB held directly to the switch housing?

I like (surprise, surprise) Topre's approach of slotting each housing so that when they are side by side they allow the screw to pass through to the mounting plate but for the large keys it looks like Topre have a similar approach.

Yes, they're self-tapping screws. The holes don't pass through to the mounting plate.

I don't know why people hate foam & foil so much. This keyboard is one of my favourites. It is light, very smooth and pleasant. It looks like the main problem is the life span of the foam. I can see that this keyboard was used in an office, mainly for accounting - because the keys with the flattest foam are on the numeric keypad, especially the + and %. The alpha keys aren't crushed at all. I don't know if there are any problems with the crushed keys registering though because I haven't actually converted this to USB yet.
