Great/Interesting Finds

I believe that in Western society with its mix of democratic capitalism and government controls including some socialistic aspects here and there, we owe something to all who have contributed knowledge, expertise, goods and services to the overall enterprise.

No business can survive without producing or supplying things that others need or want, and no business can survive without earning a profit. The same principles extend to individuals. I expect to pay for things that I would find difficult or impossible to produce myself, whether I am dealing with a large corporation or with an individual person.

On the other hand, if some people or organizations choose of their own free will to be altruistic and give things away or produce them at cost or less than cost, this is their prerogative, and as a beneficiary of such gestures, I am very grateful.

Although I greatly appreciate altruists and their gifts, if they decided to charge or charge more for their contributions, I would understand and pay for what I wanted or do without.

Moreover, if others decide at the outset that they need or prefer to charge for what they can offer to others, this is their prerogative. It does not make them lesser human beings because they enter into simple transactions: person A produces something; person B pays for that something.

I learned long ago that "there is no such thing as a free lunch". In the end, someone pays, even if the payment is not immediately apparent.

I should hope that DT would be a place where various points of view and different philosophies are greeted with tolerance, and that we can have the courtesy to treat one another with mutual respect and good humor.

Life is short, and while we are around, we should help each other enjoy it!

It has RESTAUR, SUPPR and ENTREE keys. I'm getting hungry just looking at it.

I have to admit RESTAUR (français) sounds a lot better than GRDSTG (deutsch).

Volume control. Most beamsprings have that. We've successfully nagged Xwhatsit to make it into a solenoid toggle!

These guys have a heavy metal ticker (a solenoid) built into them. You can set it to fire on every keypress, if you want something louder than ten thousand suns a whole desk of buckling springs. (Beamsprings aren't exactly silent even when it's switched off.)

I think that key was originally used to control the ticking. Certainly looks like a volume control of sorts! CAN YOU HEAR ME YET, OKAY GOOD NOW WE'RE TALKING

Then something tells me there's a beamspring in your future. Although what colour you'll paint it, I can only guess…

mr_a500

Now I'm picturing a beamspring with multiple solenoids, flashing lights and a glowing "tilt" indicator if you lean on it or smack it too hard.

So my search for cheap deals on ebay brought me to this :

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/7-x-FUJITSU-1 ... 4897.l4275

From what I understand he's selling 7 boxes of Fujitsu keycaps, each box with enough for 25 keyboards. I've been googling for 30 mins now trying to find out more but I couldn't find anything relevant.

As I understand it these are just the 1x2u keycaps for a Fujitsu POS keyboard, probably the Fujitsu 133UQ (don't know what that is, just found it through a quick search). I don't know anything about the switches, though. Could very well be just an ordinary rubberdome.

Slightly OT, but
IBM 4707-E01 9" mono monitor http://www.ebay.com/itm/321539510446
Ships to US only

Image

Complete with the rare tilt and swivel base ready for your desk - these tend to come with POS terminal arms.
(S)VGA compatible, max res 800x600 (256 colours) - but it is mono...

Being a little 9 incher and period and lineage correct, this would look very much at home with a kishsaver or any 4704 board!
And unlike the 4704 displays this is very much more interfaceable - probably ready to go for many of you! :D

Don't let it become a planter

And you could see your crappily-soldered and twisted through-hole electrolytic caps through the otherwise ultramodern case.
