As much of a commitment this would be already, I feel to really take something like this on would require the decor to match - period and colour wise! For this reason (and many others), I won't be going for it.
However, thinking about this has reminded me of my poorly desk top and the relatively feasible potential for replacing it with kitchen worktop with a cutout for a specially designed module, that would integrate whatever keyboard / pointer / wrist rest / blinkenlights I felt like.
