I've been staring at this Ebay listing for, oh I don't know, three months now. And I still don't know what it is.

Here's a previous posting: http://deskthority.net/photos-f62/ibm-e ... t6920.html

Can anyone here enlighten us on this? What's the difference between this and a normal XT? I guess the only real way to find out is to crack it open and see

The EMR has a different connector on the end. It is a tempest keyboard, which means the RF from the keyboard can't be transmitted over airwaves, and thus "spied" upon by someone else. These were used mostly by the military and their contractors.

It is a standard XT with shielded cable and controller, so definitely not worthless!

It is not just the controller that is shielded, the whole keyboard is. It is quite a bit heavier than a standard XT, and the connector is 25 pin D-sub, IIRC.

Photos in the auction look like a mormal XT connector on this one.

It looks like a great keyboard for someone who's either paranoid or an army fan.

Yep, it's a milspec XT. I've been eyeing it, but I'd feel bad replacing the cable with less-than-hardened USB and an unshielded Teensy. :D

How would you convert these? The controller is covered up with that paste and the connector won't work with Orichalons plug in converters.

Why not? Looks like a more sturdy but standard XT keyboard connector to me.

Well, it's a bit overpriced for an XT to be honest. But if the connector is indeed XT, like this:

Then you could build your own external converter for it, like I did with my Soarer box. The DIN sockets are standard parts.

I haven't seen one from the inside, and assumed it has aluminum or copper Faraday cages. Is the controller (and its pin header, more importantly) gunked up?

If so, I guess you need to use an external converter then.

Oh well it looks like you can indeed. I thought the connector on the EMR was different than the other XT's.
