Fujitsu Peerless isn't good.

Fujitsu Peerless is strange and rubberdome(ish). The boards are pretty good build quality. Not sure what they are worth though.

The value is relative. Would be nicer if he had the original box. I'd say 25-30 max.

Oh, I'm well aware of what Peerless is. I've owned a Peerless board before.

It's just dreadful to type on, IMO. And I don't mean in a "it sucks compared to buckling spring and clicky Alps" like how I mean my anti-Cherry mentality, I'd still take MX blues over a rubber dome. I mean it in a "I'd rather have a decent membrane rubber dome" sense. (Yes, I know, Peerless is a membrane rubber dome at heart, but it's fatiguing to type on for me, whereas I've typed on halfway decent membrane direct domes that aren't.)

Peerless isn't one my favorite switches either. I don't find it fatiguing to type on, the whole switch feel is strange to me. "Anti-Cherry mentality"? How so? I see you have Matias Click listed as your favorite switch, I have yet to try any Matias switch. But I do know various Alps.

Thanks guys, I was actually thinking of getting an original HHKB 2 (PD-KB02), but might not bother if the switches are going to be bad.

So the main reasons they aren't good are because of how fatiguing they are?
Do they feel mushy? I thought they sounded quite good by the description on the wiki:

"The switch feel is fairly similar to IBM membrane buckling spring, but with greater resistance and a comparatively rough feel. A Model M keyboard feels softer and much smoother in comparison."

The problem is exactly that - greater resistance. Also, because the keycap acts through a spring, then that spring acts (through a cup, which is how it clicks) on the rubber dome, I find that there's major inconsistency in actuation and force depending on how fast you hit the keys, due to the dampening effect of the dome. It actually feels decent if you're slowly hitting one key at a time, but it stiffens up with speed, and I hate that. Actuation also moves higher in the stroke, which isn't bad, but the stiffness is, so...

And, I don't like Cherry MX switches. I don't think they're bad (although I think browns are mostly pointless), but I don't get the hype. I think they're better than rubber domes, but not that much better. As far as Matias... the closest Alps I've used that I can remember is SKCM amber, and the ambers are actually smoother and more tactile. However, I'm not going to harvest Apple //c keyboards for them, I'd rather use the //c that they're installed in. (It's been a while since I've typed on SKCM blues, though.) I'd say the Matias Clicks are slightly lower force and higher tactility than SKCM whites, to put things in perspective, and Matias's goal was to clone the SKBM white, and I think they actually did better than the SKCM white even.

As far as the PD-KB02, I was under the impression that it ran straight rubber domes, not Peerless.

I really don't like to contradict our wiki authors but I would not say that Peerless is similar to IBM membrane buckling spring in feel. But I only own one used Peerless keyboard, so my reference is limited. From what you are writing you might want to try before you buy if that is possible for you. In my opinion there is no good or bad, just different. You need to find out or know what your preference is and then start shopping. I can't tell you.

I would agree with that. I'm not any good at describing any switch feel. Sorry.

Linear on membrane with pad-printed caps, IIRC.

The one in my A3020 (technically, it's not an A3010 keyboard, as the A3010 had green function keys instead of red) isn't the very worst keyboard I've typed on, but it can't be described as good.

It is interesting that Acorn chose to copy US ANSI Model M layout for a machine that never really took off outside of the UK, though, even after UK ISO layout Model Ms were out. They used that layout on all of their ARM2/3-based machines that were actually released (the A500 prototype was different, but it was also before the ARM2 was even finished), and then switched to UK ISO layout rubber domes for the RiscPC and A7000.
