They could then have their AWS account shut down. 100% worth it.
Between all the mean comments and jokes about GH in this thread. I have to confess, some actually made me chuckle and I'm a GH hugger.
This suggestion above gets my vote...

Most of the jokes are light-hearted and not to be taken seriously.
As for the above suggestion: some people on Reddit have already noticed the "last logged in from" reverse-DNS lookup and found the script kiddie's ISP, state and home-town. Definitely enough to file a complaint with. Did anyone mirror the video before it was taken down?

Seriously though, GH is a crucial component of worldwide keyboard culture. I like what we do better, and how we go about it. But the web without GH is a poorer place. They'll be back.
Well said, thanks.

It fucking sucks that
a DDOS essentially kills the whole forum for days, after R00tw0rm I thought maybe we had gotten past this shit
Still hosted on iMav's home server
The website has no real upkeep costs, so any donations go
elsewhere..
At least that's what I heard. Please do correct me if I'm wrong.
If this is true, I actually have no problem if someone is taking a little off the top, because people deserve to be compensated for the work they do. Although a little transparency would be nice, if people are DONATING with the intent of it not being a person's salary.

I don't believe the above is true. They have a hosting provider and they have to pay for hardware, power, and bandwidth. None of which are negligible.

tl;dw Screencast of a person launching a
script on an Amazon EC2 instance (virtual server) and checking afterwards whether Geekhack is still reachable. Spoiler: It is not. The video ends with screenshots of the threads on Reddit and Deskthority discussing the Geekhack outage. Oh, and of course it has copyrighted hip-hop playing in the background.

I should really check out Deskthority a bit more, at least this outage gives me a chance to read up on here and maybe post a little.

Yea, this seems like hearsay. I've personally met a few the people involved with running Geekhack, and nobody is running around in Bentley's or anything. Everybody has outside jobs. I can't imagine the amount donated would be very substantial, anyways.

not a member there, but I hope the site comes back up soon ... lots of references/links on DT and on DT wiki go to GH.

DT and on
DT wiki go to GH.
With regards to the wiki, maybe the info should be backed up locally instead of just referencing GH. (Screenshots to document theads and such)

I enjoy both sites. DT to level-up my keyboard knowledge, GH for fun and relaxing stuff.. of course, like life, sometimes the fun stuff sucked up a lot of my time...

Same... I've really enjoyed lurking around here the past couple of days. Honestly, the more I find my interests turning towards vintage and antique boards the more time I find myself spending here. Don't get me wrong GeekHack has an astounding amount of info and will always be my home its that DT seems to have more of a focus on that particular niche.

Does Deskthority have a status (twitter) page that can be queried in case the forum is down?

https://twitter.com/deskthority
It didn't announce the recent server move.
EDIT: For the person managing the Deskthority Twitter account: Announcing outages/maintenance would be great

I don't think a DT outage has ever been more than 12 hours, but if it ever did get really bad we could definitely post it on Twitter, Facebook and IRC.

Come on people, fill DT with life, at least there are no big rules here, and that's the great thing! It is not only about vintage stuff, there are some great projects (matt3os new build for example), great reviews of new keyboards (like the Novatouch and soon the new Cherry keyboard), and we even have a show your Click Clack cap thread, and show your keyboard thread - but no show yourself thread! So everyone should be comfy here too. Don't mind the old and grumpy guys here, but you don't have to be huffy then when getting an unfriendly answer. Be careful with quoting though, since we don't really quote here like one would do at GH.

Why exactly have they chosen to keep the server down? I would imagine they don't want to come back online until they're a bit more 'hardened' to another attack? Does anyone know for sure? At any rate, I hope GH is back soon. Thanks to DT for hosting the refugees in the meantime.

The missing word behind them all: "young!"
We have a few younglings on DT, too. Just for some reason we act more like (grumpy) gentlemen than whatever the actual English term is for people who engage in lulz…

I just had to warn that nobody is scared afterwards, when getting a mean, but maybe true answer!
