I think there's a metal plate around that barrel, similar to that 50 key Model M numpad, which has membranes in a metal sandwich.

Okay price for a garden variety Model M. The value here is that it has been thoroughly cleaned and properly tested.

Maybe we should start circlejerking over white Alps instead to derail the inflation.Tuntematon wrote: ↑Speaking of which, when is the next blue Alps circle jerk? Blue Alps suck.
Why do you think there are so many more White Alps boards? It wasn't for cost cutting reasons.
It was because they were better. We know this as fact. Blue Alps are inferior switches.

Of course, that's why it's called progress! Things only get better over time, without exception.
Edit: I think I read something about Alps Electric receiving a lot of complaints from manufacturers about their early switch models, which is why they had to make modifications.

Guys… this is the Internet. No place for sarcasm! You'll damage the newbs.
Blue Alps are pretty neat. And I'm not buying or selling. So this is my unbiased opinion.

It's way too late for a deceptive derail at this point. But I guess even white Alps may eventually get more expensive even though there are much more of those available. Best thing if Alps Electric just picked up their production which is about as realistic as the trumpet complimenting hillary.

It is certainly a very refined switch. I look forward to seeing the completed 60% board.

if I'm not wrong affirmative -> unicomp right?zuglufttier wrote: ↑http://www.ebay.de/itm/Unicomp-Model-M- ... Sw5IJWg1Cs
Pretty cheap Model M... Just needs some new caps.
is it only me but unicomp caps seem to me quite bad..?
I mean I got an unicomp model m with integrated trackpoint.. great buckling spring experience that so far feels similar to old ones but aestetically those caps do not convince me.. kind of strange grey-ish color with "sparkles" in it.. really thin (ok it goes over another cap first, that's true) but the sound overall also does not convince me..
what are those caps actually made of? abs? pbt? and the legends, also quite disappointing, I suppose are pad printed, isn't it?
I mean all in all the switch itself is way better than any other cherry I tried as of today, but the rest disappoints somehow.... maybe that's why they sell even lower in price than older model m or even better f, right?

what is so special about this switch? are there DIYers that harvest mitsumi switches for their projects?? or is it just to have a chance to try it out since it's cheap?Wodan wrote: ↑Mitsumi switches for 5€:

well maybe for some 10 bucks I could also get rid of curiosity but so far on top of my list would be to try out many switches (basically alps and topre) you guys talk about so much here and of course I'd like to give them a chance to see what my hands do feel about!!
so far I only know cherry mx (brown, clear and blues) and buckle springs (MM), prefering the last ones for home and clears for the office (to avoid the colleagues killing me basically.. =)
btw, model m keycaps are always pbt, right? (I recently found out that caps influence a lot the feeling on the cherries so maybe the same applies to BS... on cherries I seem to like more POM, PBT and double shot ABS.. but I think basically what I like most is when they have big mass..)

Nothing wrong with posting that Wodan. I still don't know what Mitsumi's that one has?
Yes tentator the type of keycap can make a difference in the feel of the switch, which of course varies from switch to switch.

Very beat up Model M from 86 missing almost all covers as well as 2 keys on the numpad entirely, might hop onto that one if it stays low and see if there's anything I can do with it and unicomp replacement caps

Any particular sites or services you'd recommend, E3E? I know you got that nice blue Alps board from the Chinese equivalent of eBay, and was wondering if there was a comparable place for Jthe Japanese market.E3E wrote: ↑Yep, Japan has a ton of SKCL Green and SKCM Blue. Ebay is so NOT the place to look if you want those switches cheap. The US market is more suited toward getting switches like SKCM Orange and Salmon rather cheaply.
I'm not so crazy about Blue Alps these days, since I finally 'got' one (presuming it hasn't been lost in the mail somewhere...). There's a few Alps battleship boards I'd like to get, like one of those Ortek MCK-142s or the Focus FK-5001/9000.
In my mind, the FK-5001/9000 is a rarer board than any blue Alps, which come up fairly often.
