Looks great Webwit. Exactly what I was thinking. I am assuming the current list don't have links yet but it should work great once there are some with links.
Thank you.

That's going to get difficult with some of the vintage stuff, I don't even remember where I found some of them.scottc wrote: ↑I'm willing to write descriptions if there's some nice way to submit them...

I will be adding descriptions to new headers once they are added (provided that people post some info).

In most cases, you just need to add a link to the original post not necessarily a description.
Most of the banners I posted are from posts for keyboards. In others, maybe a link to an appropriate Wiki page? The issue for me is that I see a great partial keyboard or key switch but am not sure which one it is. I'd like to read more about it because I'm not sure what it is, exactly. For example, the header I am seeing right now is the "Olivetti Keyboard" logo banner. I don't recall if there was a post for this specific keyboard. If so, it should go to that post or wiki page. If not, it should go to the Olivetti wiki page here: wiki/Olivetti
Hope this was in line with what you were thinking.

It's a variant of this one: wiki/Olivetti_ANK_25-101 I took the photo.
Actually it's a real shame that these pictures are uploaded in a very low resolution. Even this forum might make the transistion to a responsive design some time in the future and with 4k displays becoming widely available, the pictures in this resolution will be pretty much useless because they will have to upscaled by a few hundred percent.
I even thought about creating an archive of curated keyboard photos or scanned old commercials in good quality and high enough resolution for future usage. From there on, it would be pretty easy to downscale the image to the appropriate size for this forum.

What exactly is "good quality and high enough resolution for future usage"?
We do also have a search function snuci, I know you know that.

I use that very frequently but sometimes the pictures cannot distinguish the actual keyboard or switch. For example, I posted an early IBM 5100 keyboard banner. It shows the keys and a hint of beam spring key switch in the lower corner but there's no hope anyone will know what that came from other than me and maybe some others who have seen my IBM 5100 post. It's not necessarily for me, it's for others who might be intrigued by a header and want a quick link to more information.seebart wrote: ↑We do also have a search function snuci, I know you know that.
As a newbie, I still don't know what some of the more obscure headers refer to. No offense but I can search for something when I'm not sure what it is I'm looking for. zuglufttier makes my point. I didn't know what keyboard that was that he took a picture of and I'm pretty sure I've looked at that Wiki page in the past.

I know what you mean, you're no newbie anymore though. Webwit was nice enough to setup that function so we'll get the descriptions ready....
The fourth one on here is the one that matt3o added recently that I cannot remember where I got it and abviously do not know what it is or if it is even real or just an illustration. But I'll find it online.

That's why the archive has to be curated. A few people should be able to decline or accept images according to some standards. I know that this is highly subjective that's why it should be done by a group of humans and not one person or computer.seebart wrote: ↑What exactly is "good quality and high enough resolution for future usage"?

WOT? The header archive curated? I'd say that's overkill. Yes currently matt3o is the single person who chooses the headers while Mu is away for a good reason. We have enough work with the DT wiki BTW.zuglufttier wrote: ↑That's why the archive has to be curated. A few people should be able to decline or accept images according to some standards. I do like the SWTPC banner but it looks grainy because of the magazine scan. I just wish I could find one of those "in the wild".

The way it is handled on deskthority is fine how it is, no need to change that.seebart wrote: ↑WOT? The header archive curated? I'd say that's overkill.
But I was thinking about an archive solely for the purpose of storing nice keyboard photos or commercials, seperated from deskthority. Though that archive could be a source for deskthority headers, too.
Could be called deskmedia or something like that I'm just thinking

Hmm OK interesting. It could be a part of the wiki I guess. I really like those old Ads, mr_a500 used to post quite a few of those.

The following are the (loose) rules I'm applying when adding banners:
- DT logo must be readable
- feature the best banner posted by anyone (even if it's not "perfect"), aka: give anyone 15 mins of glory
- keep 100 active banners
- when adding a new banner, remove the "worst" of the old ones
- update banners approximately once a week
- discard really badly saturated/contrasted or low quality pictures
- ignore "I'm still working on it" pictures
I wouldn't say it's "curated", I'm just a bot with a few filters.
Re the "deskmedia" it's already in my agenda.

I'd actually like a general-purpose image/media host for Deskthority. Just so we don't have to keep using imgur for everything.

I never use imgur or any of those just upload right here. But I know people use them to have all their images in one album which makes sense. This one is boss...
