I posted this idea a while back in i$'s FSSK thread - a replacement badge made from a PCB.
OshPark has a unique price structure - you get 3 copies of your design for $5 per square inch including ENIG (gold) finish and delivery. This price structure makes OshPark attractive for very small runs of very small PCBs. My test run came out to $3.65. On the minus side, they use break-away tabs instead of routing the full perimeter of the boards. These need to be cleaned up with a Dremel, but i think the idea is pretty good. Full routing would have made them perfect. HASL finish would have made the text silver. I'll take more picture is you guys like it.

Wait wait wait, I don't really understand, why are these made out of a PCB? And surely the idea is to stick these on the front case, right? Because if it is, I'm definitely up for some .

I guess that's how they make these, a nice novelty I'd say. I sent them an email. We might have to start a little GB for these.Chyros wrote: ↑Wait wait wait, I don't really understand, why are these made out of a PCB? And surely the idea is to stick these on the front case, right? Massively interested as well. Would be neat to see how well the edges clean up after you file/dremel
EDIT: It would be really interesting to see square badge as well

Until there is no response from OshPark or wcass this is going nowhere! The badges are nowhere to be found on the OshPark website.

I'll publish the files here after i test the fit. This is the 101 size - the SSK size will still need to be drawn up. It would be easy to do square badges and custom badges too. If you are looking for something special, shoot me a PM.
My skills are in drafting, so would suggest that someone volunteer to run any group buy. Or you could just order 3 from OshPark - but think that the edge quality would be better from another fab (sorry OshPark).
For anyone thinking about running a group buy, these are 0.8mm PCB; thinner PCB (0.4 or 0.6 mm) would probably look better for the thin oval badges. With any fab that is not OshPark, you will find that there is not much difference in price between ordering 10 and ordering 50 - so your cost per badge will go down quickly as you order more.

Personally, I really dislike the FSSK name. i$ and Lizard have done great work, but that name needs a rethink. My eyes see FFSK. The for fuck sake keyboard! It's an ugly, overlong alphabet soup.
I'd much prefer IBM as the main logo, with Space Saving Keyboard written out at full length. Perhaps with Capsense too.

I have the blue badge of the newer Ms, this will make them looking "nice" when transformed into FSSK or FEXT

Sorry Muirium, the naming of my projects follows the same democratic process that the pictures in the heading do: one man democracyMuirium wrote: ↑Personally, I really dislike the FSSK name. i$ and Lizard have done great work, but that name needs a rethink. I had time to dig out my Dremel and i cleaned up the edges some. Here are some quick pictures.
If you order from another vendor, delivery will likely be quicker (even coming from China) and edge quality will likely be much better. You also have options for PCB thickness (.06 would be a good option), mask color (lots), and text color (HASL for silver, ENIG for gold).
Now the question is ... what to use to stick it on the case?
The zip file below is what i sent to OshPark. If you send them this same file, you will get a couple of warnings that the there is no drill file, bottom mask, bottom copper, silkscreen - this is normal as this doesn't have any of those things; check the box that says "continue anyway". When you get to the "Cart", check the option for "2 oz copper, 0.8mm thickness". The text will be gold and the mask will be dark purple - same as in these pictures. The price it shows is the price delivered. Mine arrived about 3 weeks after i placed the order, but i have heard that international delivery can add a few additional weeks. If you order from another vendor, delivery will likely be quicker (even coming from China) and edge quality will likely be much better. @Muirium, I figured you would have gone with MF and MFSS. MF are always my two favorite letters to see together for obvious reasonsMuirium wrote: ↑Personally, I really dislike the FSSK name. i$ and Lizard have done great work, but that name needs a rethink. You're in luck, I already hacked up a design for that but only in Illustrator.Muirium wrote: ↑I'd much prefer IBM as the main logo, with Space Saving Keyboard written out at full length. Perhaps with Capsense too.

The more I look at this, the more I like it. Especially the font type for the subtext. It reminded of the old RS/6K badges (and basically anything with a model on the badge), so looked it up. Compgeke... Can you take your "Capacitive Space Saving Keyboard" badge, and make the dimensions more closely resemble the image above? "IBM" should be bigger, and brought down slightly more into the corner. Maybe even reverse the colors to be what the end result will be so our brains don't need to "reverse negative". I like the subtext font size of your "capacitive" one (regardless of the number of words). Nice work.Compgeke wrote: ↑
We do need better wording though... I like nothing we have come up with so far, and I think we should avoid the need to call the SSK version a completely different thing. Use one term to describe the "keyboard line" (something simple like "Capacitive Model M"), and let people refer to the mini as the space saver naturally (maybe slapping the SSK moniker on the badge for that one only like the E20 above if people are adamant about wanting it).
Again... Great start

The smaller font in Compgeke's draft is Helvetica. I can always get behind that!
I'd still prefer a fully centered IBM though. With Capsense on the upper side and Keyboard below, perhaps.
