Those parts suppliers don't even care which one you get - they'll quote you just as much for super common switches as well. Ask them for a quote on SKCM whites if you want a good laugh, IIRC one of them wanted $10/pc that I talked to..
They sell the actual docutech keybaords for over a grand. It's pretty ridiculous. Also, with those switches, they're obviously clueless over pine vs bamboo, so you'll never know what you're getting from them.

Despicable. :P

That's a great seller, I like their name too heh. I bought a NOS NTC board from them, they were kind enough to split it from a signal interpreting unit/computer of some sort. Very easy to deal with, but it's a fairly big seller, so I believe there are a few different reps you might get a response from if you contact them.

I love that ZKB-2 with those mods Matt - I'd do the same with these SKCL Browns if I do end up getting those in my board. I have a Gold/Black Heath Zenith badge on my NOS SWA4300, but there's no way I'd rip it off that beauty...would have to find an XT board...there are some in that style that just have the Heath name - wouldn't mind that either.

Yep - that's one of the ones I was thinking of, but I'm not ready to get into that project yet...maybe in a few months! Here's the one with the Heath badge I mentioned too:

yeah that one has been posted for (i feel like) close to half a year... that seller overprices all the keyboards he/she posts it seems.

Yup, but I believe you mean the 'Vintage computer museum' seller. This one seems like a copycat, or perhaps an alternate account of theirs. Either way, you're right - they both always post overpriced everything, even dirty old F&F boards.

Thanks.

BTW it's actually a 163-73 so it doesn't have a metal backplate but also has Alps dyesubs unlike the ZKB-2 ;) It used to have the tree logo as well so its a MAJOR improvement. It also makes replacing the badge much easier since its permanently glued in and not removable. You can find the full restro-mod here: http://imgur.com/a/BPGyo

What do you think of the SKCL greys? Worth trying to put together a keyboard full of them, for somebody who types on 98g blacks at work? I know they're heavy as hell, but more curious about the less quantifiable bits - e.g. the cushion-y properties of SKCL striped ambers and browns.

I only have one of them. Not sure where to get a good quantity of them. I have seen the SGI Button Box which has 34 or so. I've seen a seller on TaoBao selling individuals, but I think that ran out. They're 80g, but I'm not sure how to quantify how they feel from only having one. It'd be cool to have an SKCL Amber board, but honestly, you can always just buy some SPRiT springs for the optimal weight.

But yeah, the cushioned aspect of SKCL Brown and S. Amber is quite nice. Not sure if you'll get that with SPRiT.

Yea. Finding enough SKCL Grey's would be almost impossible. SKCL Cream is similar, and easier to get ahold of in larger quantities. It is its predecessor anyway.

SPRiT springs are the easiest way to go.

Harshmallow wrote: Yep, Oki Gourd Springs. I thought they would be a little louder for some reason, but I really like the light tactility and softer noise - plus the keys just feel...bouncy? If I were to make an analogy, I would equate it to bouncing around on a pogo stick - so simple, but just so fun.

I quite like the shape of the keycaps too, they're very similar to those low profile magnetic valve switch keycaps. Plus they're dye sub PBT, so bonus points there :) I'm sure you'll find some SKCM Brown soon enough, you've tried pretty much every other switch at this point anyway!
Yes, they do have a "bouncy" feel since there is no feedback excepet that discrete click of the gourd spring.
Hypersphere wrote: There have been quite a few IBM 5140 computers on eBay during the past six months or so. As you probably know, these come with SKCM brown Alps and very nice dye-sub PBT caps.
My incomplete phrasing: of course I meant: Believe it or not I have not been able to find SKCM Brown Alps in three years in the EU.
Nuum wrote: Finding IBM 5140's in Germany is hard, especially in German ISO layout. I was searching over a year for mine and it was the only one that appeared on ebay.de over the whole period. I paid around 40€ just for the keyboard.
You got lucky, although I would not be picky with the layout.

I forgot if I mentioned that SKCL Grey is 80g. This is also the same as the SKCL Heavy Green switch. SKCL Cream and SKCL Brown are 70g, so a bit lighter.

Yeah, going with SPRiT springs is easier than dealing with finding rare switches.

I bet he's kicking himself that he let the earlier ones go for a lower price. That's kind of satisfying to me :)

That seller just keeps pulling them out of thin air. Ok I think most of the people who wanted one here got one, now don't keep buying them at those prices! Yikes, that's just shy of $100 more than mine cost :S

Edit: I think he's doing what any seller would...they initially thought that dirty old keyboard wouldn't be a high value item, then for some reason they kept disappearing as soon as they were listed, so they keep pushing the envelope to see where it'll cap out. Who knows, they might have several more just waiting to be posted.
