If you haven't tried genuine Alps yet, and if you are satisfied with Matias switches, get a Matias-switch board and live happily in blissful ignorance!tkim wrote: ↑Educate me ?
Was hope to get my first alps board, only had a brief encounter with Matias switches and thought they were great and then heard alps are considerable better.
On the other hand, if you wish to spend time hunting for vintage boards, sampling the rich smorgasbord of various Alps switches, and searching for keycaps, join the party and prepare for wallet depletion.
Ultimately, if you go down the Alps rabbit-hole, you will want to build your own custom board with the Alps switches you like best.

I could not agree more with Hypersphere, but if you do start getting into old Alps be prepared to encounter disappointments along the way more than once.
Something like this is a good cheap beginning:

I'm actually bidding on that mac kb haha as for the the wallet depletion, I bought a set of HS's so I'm helping fund yours too
Yes the reason why I'm searching for alps boards is to build a custom board, I don't enjoy anything larger than 60% simply because of desk space and that I travel with my boards. Which sort of makes me feel bad about all the GMK leftovers I have.
Oh I see, well that's okay, more power to this person. I try to make myself feel better by saying "well at least it's going to another enthusiast and hopefully they aren't just going to skin the board like i am" haha

Thanks very much for the links, but I was wondering isn't the DELL a different sort of switch?.
Must admit I have only been in Germany after coming from the other side of the world and I've already bought myself 3 vintage cherry boards . I thought I would be blowing the money on touristy things but I've just been searching for all sorts of german keyboard goodies

You are correct -- that particular Dell is a rubber dome keyboard rather than having Alps switches.tkim wrote: ↑seebart wrote: ↑I could not agree more with Hypersphere, but if you do start getting into old Alps be prepared to encounter disappointments along the way more than once.

By the way, if you like Matias switches (as do I; they just aren't as refined as good-condition Alps switches), I've heard that they have been introducing new and improved switches into their keyboards and supplying the new switches to other companies such as KBP. I have a KBP V60 with the previous-generation Matias Click switches. I might give the new ones a try to see if they have noticeably improved. IMO, Matias switches provide a better typing experience than any variety of Cherry mx switch or clone, although if you like linear mx switches, Gateron yellows are rather nice.

Sorry about that Dell link, you spotted that very well without any help though. Call it a test. Just kidding.tkim wrote: ↑Thanks very much for the links, but I was wondering isn't the DELL a different sort of switch?.

That's a handsome and sturdy board - probably can damage a Model M with it.tkim wrote: ↑The Philips PM 3655 (white alps) I was looking at just sold for 128.78 EUR

just a note about the SKCM cream dream, only go for NeXTs that have the ansi eqsque enter. avoid the bigass enter ones because they can come woth pine black alps very commonly.cumwagondeluxe wrote:Ah shit, took a nap and slept past the auction end date for the two NeXT keyboards posted earlier. The black pine Alps are actually quite good: made in Japan old logo Dell AT101 mostly come with them, and those made in Taiwan come with Salmons.
They are much better than the 'Crappy' bamboo blacks.

Does top housing really matter that much? e.g. if I were to replace the bamboo tops on my noice white damped alps with pine ones, would I actually notice a difference? or is it just that the pine ones tended to have a better switchplate/tactile leaf design as well on top of having a marginally smoother top housing

Is there any publicly available information regarding these new switches? Or will it be the same situation as the Matias PBT.Hypersphere wrote: ↑You are correct -- that particular Dell is a rubber dome keyboard rather than having Alps switches.tkim wrote: ↑seebart wrote: ↑I could not agree more with Hypersphere, but if you do start getting into old Alps be prepared to encounter disappointments along the way more than once.

I think this is a wang keyboard, but it doesn't have a num pad. It's like a wang ssk? Description says it's a part number 732-3410, but google didn't turn up anything.

Apparently they do. I haven't tried swapping, but some members here swapped pine tops on bamboo switches and said that they couldn't be distinguished from proper pine switches.cumwagondeluxe wrote: ↑Does top housing really matter that much? e.g. if I were to replace the bamboo tops on my noice white damped alps with pine ones, would I actually notice a difference? or is it just that the pine ones tended to have a better switchplate/tactile leaf design as well on top of having a marginally smoother top housing
I can just endorse everything what was said here.Hypersphere wrote: ↑If you haven't tried genuine Alps yet, and if you are satisfied with Matias switches, get a Matias-switch board and live happily in blissful ignorance!tkim wrote: ↑Educate me ?

After I hesitated and missed the complementary keyboard module, spending 30 dollars on just a numpad seems a bit rich for my blood, even if they are pristine orangesalh84001 wrote: ↑BTW, is anyone here already bidding on this. I just might give it a shot.

Just won this Industrial Model M13, unfortunately last minute sniper bids raked up the price significantly but I still think i got it for a decent price.
