A new US Republican thread 2016

On a political note the brexit situation is "interesting" in a negative sense (to me) and now the Scottish may get their second independence referendum. But don't worry I won't open a thread for this.
I'm actually interested as an outsider on this, because I don't get exposure to it, and from my perspective, it seems like it's standing still.

It is fascinating to me that this thread is like a microcosm of the US arena.

The perception of most of us Trump-haters is that there is an automatic and predictable reaction by the Republicans to any form of criticism:

They spew venom and personal aspersions onto whoever said what they didn't like hearing, then abruptly change the subject without ever even remotely addressing the actual question that was raised.

I doubt that more than 10% of the posts in this thread contain viable content.

Why is that? Is it fear, anger, guilt, remorse, what?

No it's just now getting underway (again). The Scottish parliament votes for second independence referendum but from what I understand the UK government already signals it will block any effort for now. If I remember the first vote for independence was pretty close. Muirium had a thread going for that. Serious situation.

Not sure, I really liked this thread in the beginning, the further the election progressed the "stranger" everything got. Now there is a whole new situation with rapidly developing stories on many levels and I must say jacobolus’ posts are sometimes somewhat difficult to follow (for me) as a non US person with only superficial US political knowledge.

What's up with all the mushrooms webwit? I'm the guy here to take it Offtopicthority !

He's demonstrating that he is a fun guy!

I didn't focus much on individual plants, and when I did, I still didn’t. To my surprise, I do have a set of mushroom/toadstool shots; these are the two that I managed to get into focus:

The last one was my first wallpaper at my current job — it's across the road and over the hill from where I live (all the pictures are above are from the local area). Later on, I used it as the heading background for the newer (still current) theme, as an "organic" texture, by squashing it flat and tinting it purple.

Sorry seebert. If there were a meatier discussion with less petty name-calling and a meaningful effort to engage by all interlocutors here, it would be possible to get into the context and history a bit. There were a few posts where I tried to do that a couple dozen pages ago, which were predictably ignored by the whiny insult brigade. If there’s anything you’re specifically curious about, just ask away. Though, fair warning, that does take a bit more commitment of time and effort for everyone in the discussion to follow.

Even just e.g. the Trump–Russia connection story has a pretty complicated set of actors and events, and tracing the chronology of the Trump team’s omissions, lies, story changes, etc. is non-trivial.

Trying to get to the full context of US politics, e.g. the history of US race relations, criminal justice, women’s rights, labor and labor rights, environmental regulations, foreign adventures, international alliances and treaties, tax policy, ... would take books worth of material.

I found that the scene exceeded my camera's dynamic range, which is a pity.

The extremely short and specific version is that American politics have been heated and contentious from the beginning, as they are everywhere, but they became "weird" in earnest with the ascent of Reagan in 1980 and the entire landscape lurched drastically rightward pretty much overnight. Everything since is essentially fallout from that sea change. The Democratic Party, in contrast, has never had a "master plan" or even a game plan, addressing each individual issue as it comes up, hence seeming weak even though they generally advance policies favored by solid majorities of the American public.

Since that time, the Republican Party has made well-orchestrated and extremely well-funded efforts, both strategically and tactically, to gain and hold control of all government functions at every level, from local to national. Except for the West Coast and the northeast, they have generally been pretty successful in their endeavors.

One fascinating saga is that at the time of the Civil War the Republican Party was the party of Lincoln and the Abolitionists, and the Democratic Party was the party of the Southern slave-owners. How did the parties pivot 180 degrees into the opposite poles over the course of a century? That is an interesting read.

This is what has been missing on Deskthority. A hiking thread. I take all my photos with my craptactular Samsung Galaxy S4, including the panorama shots. I'm just to lazy/uninterested to get into professional gear. I figure someone more into that has made a better shot before.

Hmm, I think a thread of sharing photos from excursions (holidays, weekend trips, a hike in the woods, etc,) would be a great thread. Perhaps we could start that one.

In debate, ideally, people only exchange opinions, ideas and sometimes sarcasm, however, people do get personal and emmotional from time to time, it's human nature, especially on politic-related topics...

Interesting lighting with the first and final shots. The last one is like a fried egg gone horribly wrong.

I don't fully recall quite what prompted this sketch — it seems not to be directly based on what I thought I read in an e-mail, but they were long e-mails!

http://www.politico.com/story/2017/03/e ... ned-236655

“A supervisor at the Energy Department's international climate office told staff this week not to use the phrases "climate change," "emissions reduction" or "Paris Agreement" in written memos, briefings or other written communication, sources have told POLITICO. [...]

“The office has regular contact with officials from foreign countries, which may have led to the more aggressive action on language than in other offices, a source said. At the meeting, senior officials told staff the words would cause a "visceral reaction" with Energy Secretary Rick Perry, his immediate staff, and the cadre of White House advisers at the top of the department.”

It’s not clear to me whether Rick Perry’s “visceral reaction” would be shitting himself or vomiting.

Florida banned it over 2 years ago, way ahead of the curve.

But not to worry, Orlando/Disney World, halfway up the state, in the interior, is a full 26 meters above sea level.

Party of (literally) poison. https://www.nytimes.com/2017/03/29/us/p ... .html?_r=1

Late last year, EPA scientists came to the conclusion that chlorpyrifos (a.k.a. Dursban), a chemical similar to nerve gas, should be banned (in 2000 they “found that it could damage the brain in newborn rats and cause weakness, vomiting, diarrhea and other ill effects in children”, but it was only sharply curtailed (e.g. banned for household uses), not banned for agricultural uses). Recent research had shown that “[effects] included learning and memory declines, particularly among farm workers and young children who may be exposed through drinking water and other sources.” Trump’s climate-denier EPA chief, Scott Pruitt, rejected the EPA scientists and announced that the chemical will not be banned while he’s in charge.

The page takes very long to load, obviously because of the many, many off-topic pics which have now been posted
following a post without any text and without any relevance to anything that had been said before
but with 23 pics each about 1.2 MB.

Of course on DT everybody is free to post off-topic as much as they want, and I certainly do so as much as anybody else
but I would like to be able to still read this thread.

You haven't posted one of those where a country with $0.54/h minimum wage has completely destroyed and hacked the election process of arguably the most prosperous empire on this planet right now.

You should do that one, it's been literally HOURS since you posted that.

Who hacked what now . There is no evidence whatsoever that the election was "hacked" the CIA saying its true honest is NOT evidence.

the only thing i have seen with any evidence behind it is somone form the DNC got there google account hacked as somone called him up and asked him for his password and he gave it out.

Oh look at you, coming out with reason and logic, as if that matters to shills in this thread.

From a country...where suicide is a national sport...comes THE HACKERMAN. He hacks and doesn't afraid of anything! Hack hack and Trump wins! Hackerman gets paid $100 and goes to commit suicide, for he is THE HACKERMAN - shills' ultimate fantasy why /theirguy/ didn't win.
