Well, there’s always caps right? My very best set of cylindrical MX mount caps is off a G81. Also: I’m no Cherry specialist, but aren’t the G81 and G80 cases compatible? And NCRs are that cooler dark colour, making them something of an industrial IBM…

Those dark grey keyboards are obviously not branded NCR - which as an NCR owner I would woefully admit, makes them even rarer
Just as an info, NCR branded boards do not simply have a sticker, the brand is molded together with the upper shell.

The NCR is a G81 with MY switches - which is one of the worst sounding switches of all time. Plus they are scratchy as hell....
Just as an additional info, you can simply replace the G81 innards of a NCR keyboard with a G80 plate.

Hey Choc!

Are you saying the dark grey shells look promising? I’m not after them (no full-size Cherry boards to swap them on, well besides a windows keyed 1.25u mod G80-3000 which I doubt counts for much). Just curious.

Promising? They look interesting, never seen them before - while of course I’m not the reference, photekq is

This is not true. I've had to remove and replace the badge on one of mine, dark gray. They're certainly not molded into the plastic. So, in this case, they've just fallen off.

These NCR keyboards are sought after for both their keycaps, and their grey industrial cases. The fact that they are G81 matters not. In fact, that goes for most G81s that have redeeming qualities. Like their keycaps, see : G81-3000SAA, G81-3004SAT, G81-0991, or any G81 on the Cherry database spreadsheet (viewtopic.php?f=2&t=21307)

Sure for someone who fancies keycaps or the case it makes sense.
But the keyboard in itself is an outright shame in the keyboard community (primarily for those horrible switches).

Except that with the model m, people love the switches as well as the case and keycaps, so I'm not quite sure where you're coming from.

I've always had a sweet spot for the 3077. It was the first 3000 variant that really caught my eye, the case colour and NCR logo looks sublime in my opinion.

Then I got one, put a custom PCB in it, and thoroughly enjoyed it as my daily driver for over a year. It was one of the nicest boards I've ever had pass through my hands, both in terms of looks and typing feel. Cherry G80s get a lot of hate, but I think most of it comes from people who've a) never tried one b) heard from somebody that they're "bad" or "low quality", and then absorbed that person's opinion as their own. Don't forget - a G81 can be turned into a G80 easily. I like the feel/sound of G80s because of their flexibility, I wrote a bit more about it here if you have any interest. It's the same reason I prefer the HHKB to Realforces.

Keyboards are subjective in many respects. Cherry G80s aren't for everyone, and neither are IBMs (although I enjoy both). Stop touting your opinion as fact - there's something for everyone, and there's no "best" opinion.

-----

Back on topic:

Don't get your hopes up about finding Model Ms/Fs here. It's pretty clear from the images shown that this is mostly going to be NCRs (G81 and G83 - I can see at least one of the latter) and rubberdomes. If there are any Model Ms/Fs hidden in there you're just going to have to wait for more of the pile to be revealed.

In the meantime, it's probably best to move this argument and any dibs-calling to another topic if it's going to be ongoing. This isn't the place for it.

We do: Model F.

But the thing is, Model M's buckling springs don't become "bad" or "unbearable" once you've tried Model F's buckling springs — they remain great (even though the latter are even better). And the difference between them is not so large that one would prefer a Model F keyboard with a bad layout (F XT) over a Model M with a good layout (full-size, SSK or battleship).

Oh they do, I started hating Model Ms once I had a hold of a Model F, because it was so much better that I couldn't believe people were shilling the Model M like they still are. In the same way, I hate beamsprings

And in fact, I'd rather use an F XT over a Model M any day of the week. So much so that I have no doubts that in all aspects, apart from the layout (that you can learn and get over with after a week), the Model F XT is the best IBM keyboard you can get nowadays.
