That price is completely absurd for the piece of hardware you're getting, IMO

It doesn't even have good caps. It would be far more price effective to design a plate and PCB to convert any number of chassis to ansi ALPS and then deck it out with switches and caps from some other source.

Did you know that in 2021, for that money, you could have bought a symbolics keyboard?

What, a real one? Or just the Alpine remake?

Interesting Sharp keyboard from Japan with green alps and what looks to be black double shot keys:
https://www.ebay.com/itm/X68000-keyboar ... 4631933760

Too expensive for me but thought I’d share.

I believe this seller is just proxying this from Yahoo Auctions at a heavily inflated price. For example here is another listing they have for a another X68000: https://www.ebay.com/itm/284626740821

Here is the exact same listing on yahoo auctions: https://page.auctions.yahoo.co.jp/jp/au ... 1032972826

Its up for 14800 Yen, which is around 120 USD. Still a tad higher than I think it should be, but a lot less than the ebay listing.

Wow you are absolutely right and that is quite a price inflation! They seem to have some interesting listings, but the language barrier has prevented me from bidding.

$120 vs. $335 for the archivists, once those links are dead. That's a spicy arbitrage.

I’ve never seen anything like this before (perhaps for good reason). I do like how the keyboard appears to be holding its “arms” out for a hug - though that might just be me. Should probably spend less time with keyboards…

Rebranded PaperPort keyboard scanner. I did some work for a company that had these on everybody's desk ages ago. You were supposed to scan everything so you had electronic records. It let to a lot of tech support issues. I have no recollection of the key feel. Most Compaqs were rubber dome by that time, but this may have had different switches.

I’d be all over that 3-in-1 typewriter lot if it weren’t for the Qwertz layout. There’s no remapping those metal hammers (well, not by me)

Then we are saved! For is it not written in the ancient source code of DT that only a True Mod would have the eye (aye) to spot a typo in a Qwerty-Azerty jumble, and that the date itself would signal his coming with four trumpet blasts? (2.2.22)

For all you ergo fans out there:

(Foam and foil and very pricy)

I noticed this too: it’s like a collision plate boundary creating a mountain of keys in the middle - surely Alps or Hima-layers. Wouldn’t work for this four-fingered typist. Actually, does anyone actually like and use ergo boards? They seem to me to be solving a problem that doesn’t exist for most people.

There's a Selectric going for ~120 USD at a thrift store. Should I get it?

Also a Smith Corona leafspring typewriter. The keys are very heavy but they are smooth surprisingly. Probably because the keyboard is pristine.

Our local Goodwill stores here in Maine usually only ask $25-$30 for Selectrics.

Unless it's a really desirable color (like red) or is something fairly rare (like a Selectric I with blue keys), I would pass.

It's quite doable actually! The Selectric uses a type-ball rather than the usual hammers in electromechanical typewriters (or the typical daisy wheels in electronic typewriters), which are easily replaced. Afaik the z/y locations are purely based on the ball. The 85 also uses a type-ball. I would love to purchase the 85, but unfortunately all messages on local platforms that say "By the way I live in another country, is it possible to ship it?" sounds fishy :?

Ah good point. I should know that as I have both a Selectric and a Wheelwriter. However, I’ve recently been binge-watching electric hammer typewriter reviews so my mind was full of them.
