Since this is spam anyway, I'll just hijack the thread to ask - what is meant by a mechanical mouse? I am confused about the mechanical part in the designation. If it uses optical switches, does it still count as a mechanical?

1. Apparently, other regulars on here are confused by the 'mechanical' part as well:

Why are so many numpties asking for "mechanical mice" on Reddit, anyway? Are theirs too "mushy?" Dread to think quite how they got that way…

2. According to another spammer in this sub-forum, apparently mechanical mice is meant as in mice who use a ball for moving:

There is no such thing as a non-mechanical mouse. Certainly not in the sense that people are missing out on a golden age of “good” mice which came before. There is no 80s IBM Model F of mice compared to the domes over membrane of (not even) today. There is no scourge of chiclet mice. They’re honestly better now than any time last century.

Oh no! You might as well excommunicate the person who makes the Keymacs keyboards from the community too, since they offer prebuilts with loose SKCM switches that have been "shucked" from boards, and then upcharges them for more than they got them for like a "scalper" would.

Cost of Prebuilt Keymacs + 88 Matias switches: 1388 euros



Cost Prebuilt Keymacs + 88 SKCM Brown switches: 1888 euros



Cost of 88 SKCM Brown switches: 500 euros

For conventional mice I agree. Older trackballs have a certain special something though.

A friend of mine really likes old IBM mice though (he's actually a member here as well) and I must say, they do look good (those with the two sticking out gray buttons).

(Some people in the retro computing community think of it as 'scalping' when one separates the original keyboard from the computer and sells it off separately. I wonder if there's a parallel there? [replace computer->keyboard and keyboard->switches])
