I watched this a bit at the start but fell off the track and never really caught up. Now with marathons and a DVR I'm catching back up, and I blame, uh, have you to thank for it, So I'm there with you gearing up for the 15th...
Breaking Bad and Dexter are the 2 best shows on tv right now IMO.

Vbulletin is a piece of cockadoodle shit that doesn't get patched often. FFS, you have to pay for a expensive software that has weak security and poor customer support. I checked out Vbulletin in the past and didnt like it.

Forums such as SMF2 are amazing. The theme support is great and best of all its free.

Hopefully the transition of Geek hack goes smoothly!

It would take 10 minutes to setup a GH blog, wordpress, free hosting account, etc. and forward the domain to it with updates. Even a registrar parked page would be better than providing bragging rights to rootworm all day long.

I hate Vanity Blogs.

I mean if we wanted Keyboard Blogs we could all go to KL's forum.

Those are pretty good shows, and I'm kind of partial to The Walking Dead as well.
Just watched some season 1 Breaking Bad, Walt giving a demo of fulminated mercury to Tuco,

quick update folks: GH is going to lay low for the next week while we regroup. at this point it's not too much of a stretch to say that we have a concrete plan, and will rise again to spite those creeps, better, more robust and more secure than before.

also, we are now completely sold on SMF 2, so fire up those template tutorials and wacom tablet. can anyone draw up a clever new template involving a phoenix maybe? possibly snacking on a tasty earthworm?
May I ask that if any username or passwords were hacked? I am curious. Either way hacked or not, I will continue to change passwords. I recommend others to use different passwords for every site you register on.
we have no concrete evidence that they accessed this information (their primary target is our domain), but frankly we can't be sure either way. please start practicing proper password management if you aren't already.

At least put up a freaking landing page that doesn't advertise you getting owned.

Hit your registrar and redirect the site to this image:

we would prefer to preserve the element of surprise for our triumphant return.

that photo is hilarious though

Triumphant return?

You sound more like Caeser returning to Rome instead of Nero Fiddling while it burns.

Well, good thing I chose the Trajan Font then for R00TW0RM.

Have to say, don't see what that has to do with didja's comment, which seems valid.

I spoke with a small group of 'web-in-the-knows' today....the overwhelming consensus was that the GH episode is pretty much avoidable with a few dollars and planning/service. I'm not quick to jump on the 'Shoulda been better" from the sidelines, but I'm of the opinion that a more comprehensive and less negligent attitude would have most likely been of great value to the security of the site. So some experience lessons for iMav. Then again, it's not much of a professional setup, but heavily in the hobby realm. But maybe that will get tuned up a bit if it returns.

I'm thinking that the info on GH should be replicated elsewhere (Deskthority)...the content isn't owned by GH. I was thinking of Whiskerbox today and that all the cables he's been making are sitting on his little wood kitchen table with no where to go :(

Well, a week in Mkawa time may be eons in Internet time so we shall see how the content flows.

They sure are protective of MY content.

You should copyright your content. Easy enough to do. Have it done by lunch on Monday. Posted by your express permission only.

My neighbors do cease and desists over lattes. PieceOcake!

You see the OLD Geekhack had extremely loose Terms Of Sevice, unlike Overclock.net.

http://www.overclock.net/a/terms-of-service

If the NEW Geekhack changes anything my content needs to be renegotiated.

I received a C&D order served to me about 10 years ago. I framed it and had it in my office as a trophy.

You can use your content as a bargaining chip for being de-banned, brother.

Yeah, but it might be one of those "careful what you wish for" things.

Plus, I sure don't want to do the grunt work moving the pics over to MediaWiki on yet ANOTHER password protected server.

I'll wait until they do it. Steal it. THEN hit them with the Cease and Desist!

By all accounts it's all your content, you may have signed over your exclusive ownership of it by posting and agreeing to whatever the TOS reads...but none of that probably matters to you.

If I had the time and inclination, I'd copy it lock, stock and barrel and post it on a dedicated website for $10 mo. so there is another place to see it. No forums, just a stand alone wiki.

But that ain't gonna happen with THIS homie. I got my hands on some sweet, sweet lovi'n....ain't gonna let this one go. Sugar Momma. Hopefully she sticks around when I start boat/motorhome living with an ipad.

Well, THAT would be boring. I'd rather troll Geekhack clueless moderators - there are so MANY of them and the girls are so EASY to irritate.

- BUMP
- Sent from iPad
- Cloud of Boobs
- Lego Pics!

good luck on the boat!

Doubt it can be done so quickly. Per the U.S. Copyright office FAQ, the average time to process an application for registration is currently 3 months for an e-Filing and 10 month for Paper Forms. The work must be submitted to be checked for meet minimal standards of originality in order to qualify for copyright and that it is not derivative work.

That is more relative although it seems a reach to think that whatever geekhack placeholder page is up will influence the attackers will do anything else but attack every chance they get, so might as well be something positive.

This. So much. Why the fuck does geekhack.org still say rootworm? Why are the users not informed? There’s no excuse for that.

they seem to stop bothering us when they think they've won.

but tbh, rootworm team are probably reading this topic anyway so it seems kinda pointless :(

R00TW0RM, putting the HACK back in Geekhack.

regardless, they're not bothering us at the moment. every time we move to take control of the domain they escalate, so we're laying low for now.
