The enigma was actually a series of machines, starting before the war commercially to keep business secrets safe. There is a U.S. Patent, number 1,657,411, granted in 1928 for the technology. Hitler and the Nazis of course used it for their own ends. There is a good page on the various versions here. There is also some info about WWII versions here including Purple, the machine for decrypting Japanese messages. Purple is lesser known but apparently yielded as good if not better intellegence than Enigma as it had greater weaknesses than Enigma and the Japanese would sit in on German meetings and report back in great detail. This is the best picture I've found of the key mechanisms.webwit wrote:The real question is if the nazis used mechanical keyboards.

Related to ripster...
I couldn't login to new GH. Is the wiki gone in there? If it is, I couldn't be bothered to register. Related to ripster because the GH wiki wouldn't had been jackshit without his contributions! But hey... let's just ban the guy everywhere and forget about his works, right?

Could you rephrase that?
Rofl. Stevie posted 16 times before he was banned at DT. And LittleStevieWonder was banned at GH even before that!
Racism!

So I was wondering, does the new GH have the wiki somewhere or is the GH wiki gone for good? I quickly checked the site today but couldn't find it.
"related to ripster" was meant to be like "speaking of ripster"..
Gaah I'm doing it wrong!

Actually you can not say "ripster" there without being censored.
Rest of my GH login attempts here.

Pretty funny actually.

It'll be fine.
You've got over a dozen smart Admin/Moderators there and SIGNIFICANT resources of Intel/McAfee behind them according to Geekhack Facebook.

I dunno about that McAfee SW preventing me logging in though. Hire a summer free intern to simple relate attachment IDs to images.
I mean, everything was backed up.
Right?
Right?
Bueller?

It's a real shame, all that info, all those mods, all those google results...
I also don't understand why they're so locked up. Elitists! When you're down for 3 weeks, it seems to me your priority is to be very open and get your community back to activity. Now they're acting like they have floods of traffic to handle, while they don't. Should have first gotten the floods back. It's like they are playing Russian roulette with their community site mojo.

Yes, it would be fairly simple. ID to filename lookup, and then modify the page display code. No need to change the database even.ripster wrote:Hire a summer free intern to simple relate attachment IDs to images.
Same for fixing links. The thread and post IDs are the same as before, so it's even simpler than fixing attachments.

Some url rewrite magic could fix that. On the other hand, google will find the new pages. Except those closed for public eyes.

The URLs are a side issue.
The real disaster is that google will now start indexing the picture-less threads, that once used to be wonderfully complete and useful. Like...

Yep, the GH mods confirmed they won't fix pic attachments.
They really need to fix up those security holes too, Even I have no problem sockpuppeting into the place. Think what a HTML pro could do!
It's like regressing to BBS days.Re: Please repopulate this forum!

much like demik's romantic life, we've decided to shelve this iteration of the pictures forum (too depressing with so many missing attachments) and start anew. huzzah!

Hey, wasn't today Saturday?mkawa wrote:@ripster (and anyone who decides to become part of his personal nunnery): if you make any attempt to test the robustness of your permaban, i will happily spend a saturday writing a ripster module that actively and silently keeps track of you and anyone who choses to help you and makes sure that they never ever have write access to the forum again.
