Socket 7 + Intel 430VX chipset, has to be a Pentium, AMD K5 or K6, Cyrix (\IBM) 6x86 or MII or some similar chip.

So, it's either an old Pentium-class system, or you're doing something with one.

Here it is, the finished product. I even replaced the internal fan with a tri-color LED one and sleeved the fan cable

That honestly looks great, are you building an old machine for a specific reason or just for fun? With the modified power supply like that it would also look great if you were to make (or find...?) an AT-style case that has a clear side, so people can see how great that looks.

Unfortunately, I don't think such AT cases exist. I will be making my own case window sometime in the future. The computer will then be a part of my retro gaming corner in the shop. Need to order some Atari Asteroids wall stickers

The computer is a Pentium 166MMX, 32 MB of RAM, 1.2 GB hard drive, Diamond 3dfx Voodoo 1, Sound Blaster AWE32, Funai 16x CD-ROM and a 3.5" floppy Cleaning up those flat cables will be a bitch.

That looks pretty good for a 1995-1996 gaming system, although I would suggest replacing the 1.2 gig hard drive with either a Compact Flash card via a CF to IDE adapter or a disk on module, as both are faster and more reliable than a hard drive as old as a 1.2 gig is.

I finished sleeving one half of an IDE cable. Looks like a fat SATA cable now

To-do:
- sleeve all the internal flat cables including serial and parallel
- sleeve the AT power cables
- install CD-ROM
- install Sound Blaster
- install another 32MB RAM
- install 5.25" floppy
- install games!
- make at least one case window

Nice work. It's fun to see some modding on old systems to keep them in life.
I agree with the idea of getting a dom, or using cf or sd over ide. For the remaining ide cable for the optical, I would be lazy and simply buy round cables, and also for the floppy. I remember they were all the rage in the modding scene pre sata.


I was working on modding old itx motherboard inside a CRT for a retro AIO until things started dying and I had to quit it. I'm still debating a lot about modding my Goupil Golf to accommodate something more than it's 286.

The hard drive is in perfect condition so I don't think I'll be touching it for a while. I do have a 2GB DOM somewhere tho

I originally wanted to get orange rounded IDE cables and a floppy cable but the dealer didn't have both in stock. So I decided to sleeve them just for the heck of it.

Have you considered moding that goupil golf to itx?

Well, I just added a Pioneer DVD-ROM and maxed out the RAM to a whopping 128 MB. How about that?

Yes that was exactly what I was thinking to do with my Golf. I had a 500mhz cpu 2GB ram sbc motherboard with a cf slot on it similar to an alix but it went pop on me as a capacitor died. I got some poly replacements but have not gotten around to trying to repair it yet.
I did get my old CRT resurrected, at least so far so good, so I might end up finishing that one sometime and just leave my Golf all original.

SDRAM won't fit that motherboard as far as I know, I believe that's 72-pin SIMMs. A GeForce 2 also is a few years too new for a Pentium, a pair of Voodoo 2s would be about as awesome as it gets.

Know that feeling. I used to run out real quick with IDE cards (needs moar hard drives!), an internal modem, a network card, Ultrasound, and a Voodoo here or here…

Slots were the shit before USB, FireWire and Thunderbolt came along. What else were you going to do, hook things up to your serial port LIKE AN ANIMAL?

I used to reinstall Windows 95 / 98 once or twice a year on my first laptop via parallel port (it had no optical drive and the number of disks was barbaric). Slow but automatic. Whatever DOS program it was that hosted the files was too old to speak to CD-ROM so I had a FAT16 partition on a hard drive with the CD's contents on it. Welcome to the 90s!
