Sticker mod
This article is a stub. You can help Deskthority by expanding it.
Description
For Cherry MX switches, the sticker mod is placing a special-purpose decal or film between the top and bottom housings. The sticker closes the gap between parts and reduces the wobble of the top and bottom housing. Contrary to what some people believe, it does not reduce stem wobble.
In recent years, the sticker mod is now called "filming" as rubber, polycarbonate, or other films are now used in place of actual stickers. Filming switches change the sound profile of the switch and it depends on the thickness and material of the film used.
Several clones of Cherry MX have a tighter fit from the start, obviating any perceived need for this mod on such switches. This mod is not known to be widely used for any other type of keyboard switch.
Procedure
It is recommended to lubricate the switches before filming as it will save the hassle of either reopening switches later on or attempting to lube with the film in place.
First, the switch must be opened in order to apply the mod. After, the film should be placed in the correct orientation (the side with the thin slot should be placed towards the diode/LED side of the bottom housing).
Finally, putting the spring back in the bottom housing, placing the stem on the spring, and closing the switch is the final step.
