When I'm not actively listening to music I need something which doesn't distract my mind too much. I'm somebody who often gets completely captured in music, analysing it and thinking about it. That's not particularly helpful when I'm working on something. Vocals tend to be very distracting to me as well.

I agree with that. I go further and avoid most music with vocals in it. I consider music to be emotion and logic, not communication. I don't want other people's words forced on my thought process. (I also think most modern music is too simplistic, linear and repetitive - which drives me insane)

I mostly listen to Baroque (concerti grossi) but also like some "space" -type music for relaxation and mood change.
