This is my reserve with commercial keyboards too, I have gotten so used to full programmability and being able to do what I want. The only exception is HHKB, that one I like the way it is. I'm sold to the 60% format, but sometimes I splurge on a bigger board (well on the Dolch because it's the only big one left that it's mine ) so a 65% would be interesting, I usually do that when I'm tired and lazy.

Part of the reason why I also bought the Varmilo was to try a full metal keyboard with steel plate, to see what the typing experience would be like.
I think the problem for me with this layout is that even though you do save space over a TKL, it isn't very much. Here's a picture comparing a TKL, the Varmilo, a 75%, and a 60%:

Sorry to spam this thread, but my long awaited order from Taobao came and I just wanted to show off the acrylic case that I got. It's really think and is of high quality, I would recommend it; you can find it here.

The case was 350 yuan and the postage from China was 200 yuan (very slow China post, I wouldn't use it again).
The postage also included another case in it too (this one), and it weighed 1.4kg. Bear in mind that they set the exchange rate depending on their own terms (i.e. in their favour) and they also add on Paypal fees too.
In total the two cases cost me around £110-120 with shipping, but I would not use Dotdotbuy again as I am pretty sure they dropped and dented the aluminium case and their help department is awful.

And where did you get that coiled cable?

That was a Aliexpress purchase, the quality is ok, nowhere near as nice as a LINDY cable though!

I get a chuckle out of the fact that an SSK is only a space saver when compared to other massive IBM boards of its era. But compared to modern boards, it doesn't save any space at all.

The person from whom I got this kept labeling it as triumph adler typewriter, although it was clear that it was an IBM. The only thing TA in here, are the caps, which do remind me of the triumph adler typewriters symbols, which for me where even better since I love the TA colorway

Have you considered trying to make a tiny 60 + something percent board out of the full typewriter keyboard? Apparently you can just slot the membrane into a regular Model M controller and away you go.

There's no such thing! To be honest, most of the time when I build a keyboard it's not because I'm going to use it 24/7... I just enjoy the act of tinkering, soldering and getting stuff working. Maybe that's why I've got so many keyboards...

That is also why i have a lot of them too, but in the end i always want to use them, they have to have a use for me, or else i wont be motivated to do them ;p for the ibm that is just it, i just wanted the SSK, nothing more

Just noticed while taking the pictures that the N key is wonky, now that's going to really bother me every time I look at it

This looks awesome The Bluegaloo mods go nice with BoW or WoB caps, very nice build. Fix that N I had the same issue with a right shift on one of the GH60 boards, it bothered me each time, I just had to fix it

It really does, I wouldn't surprise me if it was heavily 'inspired' by that case. I am not sure how to tell the difference, but I would assume anodised? It's got a smooth finish, it's not rough, and the case was CNC milled from what I can tell.

Thanks Daniel I have had these Bluegaloo caps for a while and never had a use for them.
I am not entirely sure what the problem comes from, maybe the switch? How did you fix your shift?

On my shift the problem was a bit complicated, the holes for the plastic pins were a little off, so I had to file them a little.
But I had this problem with single caps before on plate mount switches, desoldering and resoldering them solved the problem.
