It must be news to some, this thread has way more hits than most other threads here. Fun fact, club members only will be voting on this if there is an official vote.

True, but it gets too many hits from "outside" people. For example, ebay sellers trying to cash in. It needs to be restricted in some way.

Agreed, the hits are disproportionate for sure. But let's not get carried away yet.shreebles wrote: ↑True, but it gets too many hits from "outside" people. For example, ebay sellers trying to cash in. It needs to be restricted in some way.

Passing on this only because I have an ergodox in the mail...like new Kinesis Advantage w/wrist rests for $150 shipped.
http://www.ebay.com/itm/Kinesis-Advanta ... 2541195037
It's about close to market price but ones that sell in this price range (e.g. 120-150 before shipping) are usually in worse shape. It's a great keyboard!

What are you trying to prove? You cannot ignore that this thread is the most viewed and most replied to in the history of DT.
And some people are getting the feeling that so many people looking at the "great finds" every day make the finds not so great anymore because suddenly everyone has access to them, with little to no effort or contribution of themselves.

That, contrary to what people claim, it doesn't get more views (in relation to its activity) than other posts? It didn't start arguing this direction ... sorry if the facts don't support the claims.shreebles wrote: ↑What are you trying to prove? Can we maybe have this discussion merged into Cindys thread?

You're ignoring things like demographics and content.Slom wrote: ↑That, contrary to what people claim, it doesn't get more views (in relation to its activity) than other posts? It didn't start arguing this direction ... sorry if the facts don't support the claims.
For example:
Ellipse's thread is offering a new product that will be immediately compatible with modern computers. The project also appeals to the maker/hacker community. It makes sense that it would draw a wider audience than a thread dedicated to keyboards that, more often than not, require cleanup and conversion before use.
This thread draws other retrocomputing and vintage keyboard collectors who are looking for niche items. It's a much more competitive and limited group of people, so it's sensible that there would be less views.
The fact that less views occur relative to another thread doesn't change the fact that publicizing finds to the entire internet can raise prices. It also doesn't alter the fact that experienced "keyboard sleuths" with a lot of time investment in various search systems can be usurped by inexperienced users who employ larger wallets/happen to see a post first.

So we can rest the argument that unproportionally many people are just viewing this thread?
What facts do you have to support your claims wrt. content and demographics?
Prices are a completely different discussion ... more people interested => more demand => higher prices. Also more potential contributors, and maybe more pretty pictures. That collectors don't want a free market is understandable, but not something I care for

So either they post the keyboards here themselves, or the Keyboards weren't that hard to find after all?ohaimark wrote: ↑It also doesn't alter the fact that experienced "keyboard sleuths" with a lot of time investment in various search systems can be usurped by inexperienced users who employ larger wallets/happen to see a post first.

Yes, absolutely. The demographics are more important.
A partially valid point. Some post here because they don't have a better alternative -- it's not possible for a single paying club member to keep track of every other paying club member's "Wanted" list. If I know that another club member is looking for something in particular, I send them a PM before posting here.
I'm well aware of how capitalism works. Your point doesn't stand, though. It's still a free market -- it would just make it harder for inexperienced users to find the things that experienced users post unless they pay a fee to the club or paying members decide to post in the unpaid thread. Nothing changes except that the experienced researchers get to choose whether the club is rewarded for their posts. I consider lower prices for paid club members an incidental benefit.
It's like paying an organization to perform a service, which is a part of capitalism. You could also look at it like a finder's fee.
Example: Paying a private investigator to perform a generic background check is a service. The fact that it's occurring doesn't mean that the information magically leaves the free market, it simply means that people without the resources haven't found it.

I don't need any, the numbers are enough.Slom wrote: ↑What facts do you have to support your claims wrt. content and demographics?
Yes both. And like we all know plenty others take notice which was the initial purpose of OP.Slom wrote: ↑So either they post the keyboards here themselves, or the Keyboards weren't that hard to find after all?
No, and since your not alone here it does matter.Slom wrote: ↑Prices are a completely different discussion ... more people interested => more demand => higher prices. I know I'm getting off-topic, but I just want to express my admiration of Ellipse's project. I think it's amazing what he's pulled off, offering a brand-new capacitive keyboard like this. It's not a simplified design either, he went through enormous efforts to make a proper product, including a choice of colours, keycaps, layouts, etc.ohaimark wrote: ↑You're ignoring things like demographics and content.Slom wrote: ↑That, contrary to what people claim, it doesn't get more views (in relation to its activity) than other posts? If I was anywhere near as electronically apt or ambitious or confident I'd love to make a faithful remake of old keyboard switches.

Same discussion again
"Hard to find" does not mean that only one "eager searcher" will be able to find it and then post it here if not interested, or otherwise buy it.
I used to be one of those eager searchers who from time to time find something great/interesting. I reduced my searches a lot because of this thread being open to all. It's just useless, I can be almost sure someone else will post the rare gem or just interesting board I found. So why search at all?
As long as this thread remains open for every lurker, all those who invest a lot of time and effort in searching can expect that their investment will be made worthless by others who also do the same kind of thorough searches, but are not themselves interested in a particular item and then post it for the benefit of all those who do not even search at all - except in this thread.
It rewards the lazy and those who, like you, want everything to be available for free because, well, it's the Internet after all.
Silly argument.Slom wrote: ↑So either they post the keyboards here themselves, or the Keyboards weren't that hard to find after all?ohaimark wrote: ↑It also doesn't alter the fact that experienced "keyboard sleuths" with a lot of time investment in various search systems can be usurped by inexperienced users who employ larger wallets/happen to see a post first.

I'd already have a set if they made them two-tone and had useful caps like off-center capslock, etc. As-is it's fairly useless except for boring stock keyboards.

Could we not prevent that thread from being indexed by the search engines? I also wouldn't be opposed to making it open only to registered users. But restricting it to members of the club seems to me, overkill.shreebles wrote: ↑True, but it gets too many hits from "outside" people. For example, ebay sellers trying to cash in.
