Not all Apple keyboards are useless.
The case of the M0110A has the perfect size for a Vortex ViBE (by this time - with lubed Healios switches).

Woa that looks amazing. Any info on how you put the vibe in the M0110A case?

And how much effort was it to cut the separator between the alpha block and the numpad?

Looks great, I must say.

For not to derail this thread I made a new one in the "workshop" :) : viewtopic.php?f=7&t=22099

Yeah, G81-3100SAV. Caps lock from a WEY board, Cherry key from G80-2000.

One of the original brass Koalas. I've been told they were made in low quantities (I've heard different numbers, between 5-8) as a prototype run before the standard Koala. I'd be super interested in any other information anybody has! Pictured with a Cherry G81-3000SAT keyset mixed with a G81-3100SDU keyset and a Cherry LED from the G80-2000HAD.

I tried to keep these as colour-accurate as I could but the ano on this board really likes to give off a blue tint under a flash, while it's usually a solid grey. Sorry for any inconsistencies

Real talk, don't you miss the windows key? I tried winkeyless for a while and found that I'd become so used to using it for moving windows around and launching shortcuts going without it was a much bigger deal than I thought it would be...

Also, I miss my 5k :(.

If I were a Windows guy, I’d probably put it on Caps Lock, or just use the default shortcut. Alt something or another? I gave a PC using friend a G80-3000 and he has no trouble going Winkeyless, doing just that. He likes my Realforce better—“how much for one of these full size and ISO?”—but he reckons the Cherry freebie is the best keyboard he’s ever owned.

I’m almost always Winkeyless myself. I’ve always mapped Ctrl and Alt to Option and Command, and Caps Lock to Control on the Mac. Even done the same to the laptop keyboard, as habit has me reaching left of A WITH INEVITABLE RESULTS.

Capslock is left control
Left control is left FN
Left alt is left alt

Hence the winkeyless dilema...not enough keys that side of the spacebar :). I think I had FN+left alt as Winkey at some point but was a bit fiddly...Given that the only boards I really use these days are winkey boards with programmable layouts its not something I worry about, just curious as to how others work around it.

THE LAPTOP SHOUTING HABIT IS VERY RELATABLE FOR ME TOO, thank goodness I have plenty of spare boards laying around so it isn't that much of an issue unless I'm working away from my desk somewhere else in the office.

I dislike Windows keys. I prefer winkeyless.
They're negatively useful for me, and make Ctrl and Alt harder to find and hit.

Ctrl+Esc = Win
That's probably the easiest shortcut to remember: leftmost key in both the upper and the lower rows (on "normal" layouts).
Easy to press blind and with only your left hand.
In other words, fully unnecessary as a dedicated key..

I have my right alt execute some winkey-functions using the keyboard firmware. RALT+L locks the screen, RALT+D shows desktop, RALT+R run, RALT+E shows explorer. I rarely if ever miss having a dedicated key.

Huh...maybe I'm the edge-case that actually uses the winkey then. Was told another cool shortcut today too - win+shift+s for snippingtool :D.

@kbdfr, cool shortcut for the menu, but it doesn't work as a modifier; I can't move windows or open explorer/run etc using it :(.

Naw, I never used the windows key to begin with. Maybe I'd be more efficient if I did, but I usually just use alt+tab and the mouse.

davkol, thanks for reminding me of that thread, just read it again

And you are of course right, I should have written "fully unnecessary as a dedicated key for all those who use combos all the time anyway".
No need to say that I do have a Window key

I map it to fn+space (with caps lock remapped to fn) and I only use to to lock my workstation at work. Otherwise I never touch it.

On my F122 (and M122) unit(s), I map EF1 to be Win (EF2 is Esc). As positioning the Win key goes, this one works fantastically: easy to reach when needed (i.e.: not often) and shoved off to the side where it isn't a nuisance (or it's much less of a nuisance than it's normally).

EF3 has the Menu key... and I use so little, that I'm seriously thinking of remapping it to something else as well. What a useless, pointless key... at least Num Lock served a purpose when it was invented.

I use that one too, but it has not escaped notice that Micro$oft is pushing that one by improperly eliminating the preexisting Alt-PrtSc key combination. And, frankly, when one does need snipping, one needs it often, and a three-key chord is not a good choice.

New addition to the collection, a HHKB 400BN with silent sliders and HiPro keycaps. The white 400W one is stock.

I'd argue that snipping is usually more useful than print screening so I don't mind that being phased out; with a bit of luck eventually print screen will become snipping tool getting rid of the need for silly chords. And whilst three key chords isn't great but its better than my previous solution which was;
win+r for run
type snippingtool
press enter
:D

User avatar

23 Jul 2019, 12:06

And I'd counterargue that it has escaped notice to someone that it's been long years since the Print Screen key was repurposed to take a screenshot of the screen (an, indeed, welcome change). ;)

This is a game changer. Thanks HzFaq!

Lost snag it at work due to Win 10 upgrade and been suffering with snipping tool for months.
