Damn, I really prefer the vB4 Image Manager over DT's and OCN's. They don't have folders and drag and drop.
I fully understand the need for the switch though, WANNA SWITCH? has turned into WANNA TROJAN?
Of course some people may not wait for the switch in platforms...

How long does it take to get gh back online?mkawa wrote:yes, we got hit by at least one 0-day vuln in vB 4.2. we don't know if it will ever be patched and after the complete lack of response from the vB developers we don't particularly care. the attackers want our domain, but we will not be giving them the satisfaction.
we have been regrouping and will be re-architecting geekhack to be even more secure (ie, not vB based), stable and robust. we'll update folks as often as we can as we get things back online.
finally, for those doubting, gh did _not_ go down easily, despite the utter garbage that is vBulletin 4. i have no doubt that the attackers will not be disturbing us again, now that we have a chance to redesign gh properly for scale.

At this point it's sounding like it'll be weeks before GH (or whatever it's been renamed to) will come back online. And little if any pictures/attachments will be restored.

Sounds like GH is dead. An online casualty. Comeback/no comeback/ missing content/not working features/viruses passed to users.....Whiskerboxs custom cable biz is dead right along with it....
Done with that shizz....
I liked the dark page view though, and that I could post skin, and sometime talk about misc. off topic stuff. But as that changed.....(plus my life trauma)....is it a coincidence it gets hacked now????

How am I supposed to get updates on my aluminum squirrel keycaps?... I guess I just have to hope and pray they show up eventually along with my switches from 7bit's GB...
I have a bunch of shit that I was about to sell, which is an even bigger problem for me right now. I guess I'll put up a thread here during the weekend if GH is still down...

we can't make any promises, as all issues are in flux, but our proposed time-scale for a return to a live forum is on the order of days, not weeks. however, we will make no guarantees that any data from the old geekhack will return. thankfully, you have memories, excel sheets, etc., should data relevant to you not return.
you can complain about this, or you can help. we will most likely be moving to SMF 2.0.2 as the basis for the forum. one first and primary deliverable that we need is an awesome geekhack theme for SMF. sample themes and a guide to creating themes is here:

Wouldn't it make sense to move to something that you could transfer the data from GH to? Otherwise it will just be an empty site that's only GH in name...

I concur. Edit that stuff, don't edumacate them scriptkids.didja wrote:Domo, I would consider editing your post. Regardless of what you think of Geekhack and Imav, you shouldn't post people's real names or personal information even if it is publicly available elsewhere. That's bad form.

I'm sorry but this is 100% true. Even more true is that the majority of that content was contributed by Ripster. Dude made that website the wikipedia of keyboards.Soarer wrote:geekhack is nothing without the content.
That's not a complaint, just a simple statement of fact.

Yes and no... I honestly don't mean this as 'sour grapes'AKIMbO wrote:... Even more true is that the majority of that content was contributed by Ripster. Dude made that website the wikipedia of keyboards.
Ripster did a fine job organising information, writing stuff to introduce and tie it together, adding pics, etc., but what added much to that richness was all the links he put in to the sources of the info - many of them threads on GH, with postings by many others, quite a few of whom may have moved on since.
Not to mention the discussion threads behind each wiki, some of which were massive!
And there were areas he didn't cover... I'm thinking of various software and hardware wikis/mods/discussions which people put a lot of time and effort into - too many people to remember all of them.
Thankfully the IBM wiki is here!

I’m presuming by your post you’re appealing for help with theme creation? You sort of imply that you are, but don’t actually state that’s what you’re asking.mkawa wrote:we can't make any promises, as all issues are in flux, but our proposed time-scale for a return to a live forum is on the order of days, not weeks. however, we will make no guarantees that any data from the old geekhack will return. thankfully, you have memories, excel sheets, etc., should data relevant to you not return.

As for not guaranteeing return of data, that’s your prerogative, but a snarky, pat answer like “thankfully, you have memories, excel sheets, etc.” isn’t going to engender sympathy or good-feeling toward you within your userbase.
I’m pretty surprised that an enterprise like Geekhack doesn’t have some kind of reasonably bullet-proof backup method in place. Something like rdiff-backup is not particularly difficult to set up, and would probably have saved you a lot of grief.
