yes, we got hit by at least one 0-day vuln in vB 4.2. we don't know if it will ever be patched and after the complete lack of response from the vB developers we don't particularly care. the attackers want our domain, but we will not be giving them the satisfaction.

we have been regrouping and will be re-architecting geekhack to be even more secure (ie, not vB based), stable and robust. we'll update folks as often as we can as we get things back online.

finally, for those doubting, gh did _not_ go down easily, despite the utter garbage that is vBulletin 4. i have no doubt that the attackers will not be disturbing us again, now that we have a chance to redesign gh properly for scale.

How long does it take to get gh back online?

you can complain about this, or you can help. we will most likely be moving to SMF 2.0.2 as the basis for the forum. one first and primary deliverable that we need is an awesome geekhack theme for SMF. sample themes and a guide to creating themes is here:

I did for my internet forum the other month. Went from XMB (extreme message boards) a little known old bit of forum software, and moved to phpbb. Lost no accounts, same passwords, lost no data. Took an afternoon.

Yes and no... I honestly don't mean this as 'sour grapes'

Ripster did a fine job organising information, writing stuff to introduce and tie it together, adding pics, etc., but what added much to that richness was all the links he put in to the sources of the info - many of them threads on GH, with postings by many others, quite a few of whom may have moved on since.

Not to mention the discussion threads behind each wiki, some of which were massive!

And there were areas he didn't cover... I'm thinking of various software and hardware wikis/mods/discussions which people put a lot of time and effort into - too many people to remember all of them.

I’m presuming by your post you’re appealing for help with theme creation? You sort of imply that you are, but don’t actually state that’s what you’re asking.

As for not guaranteeing return of data, that’s your prerogative, but a snarky, pat answer like “thankfully, you have memories, excel sheets, etc.” isn’t going to engender sympathy or good-feeling toward you within your userbase.

I’m pretty surprised that an enterprise like Geekhack doesn’t have some kind of reasonably bullet-proof backup method in place. Something like rdiff-backup is not particularly difficult to set up, and would probably have saved you a lot of grief.
